Birds Australia currently runs over 50 projects nationwide, and many more have been successfully completed over our long history. Projects range from site-specific on-ground works to national-scale surveys involving thousands of volunteers. They are run by a variety of highly dedicated Project Officers and Managers, who report twice a year to the Research and Conservation Committee.
While we are concentrating on large-scale, strategic projects these days, Birds Australia still runs a very extensive and diverse array of activities centred on research, conservation and communication. Visit our Atlas page for a good example of the valuable service thousands of Australians perform for conservation in this country, usually in the name of having fun! A range of exciting volunteer activities exist within the project portfolio, and the project pages will be of interest to anybody who is interested in birds, conservation, or the actions being conducted by Birds Australia. For some history and a more detailed explanation of how it is all done, download Birds Australia Projects: Achievements, Challenges and the Future by Michael Weston and James O'Connor, Wingspan, September 2006. Updates on current or new projects are published in the Conservation Directions section of every edition of our members' magazine Wingspan. Please get involved - it is fun, meaningful, and very rewarding!
