Reviewing Maps and Database
314 IBAs have been identified across Australia. This is however a dynamic set of sites - additional areas are likely to be identified based on future fieldwork and some IBAs may lose their status because of habitat destruction, long-term drought or other threats. There are more IBAs in the cleared intensive-use zones of Australia as habitat loss has lead to more threatened species and smaller fragmented IBAs. There are also many IBAs on small islands around Tasmania, Great Barrier Reef and offshore islands and territories. Australia’s Important Bird Areas, a report that details Australia’s first nation-wide conservation assessment of critical sites for the conservation of the nation’s birds, is available here (6.8mb).

The identification of each IBA is supported by a database summarising the sites' birds, boundaries, land-ownership, habitats, threats and management considerations. This databasing is not yet complete but data will soon be available on the web for consultation. When finalised, maps, GIS layers and analyses will be available for download.
