Birds Australia Parrot Association
The Birds Australia Parrot Association was formed in 1996 with the following objectives:

â€¢    Develop plans for parrot research and management in Australasia in conjunction with other interested bodies
â€¢    Coordinate and encourage scientific projects using amateur and professional skills
â€¢    Encourage and assist with the publication of results
â€¢    Maintain effective communication on parrot matters within Australasia, and with similar groups elsewhere
â€¢    Formulate and promote policies for the conservation and management of parrots and their habitat

Conservation

The reason for establishing BAPA was the growing awareness about the conservation management problems of wild parrots, including cockatoos and lorikeets, and their habitats. Although the Australasian region is one of the world's most important for parrots, it has lacked a research or community group with a dedicated regional interest in them, either within the region or elsewhere.

BAPA will focus interest on some of the world's rarest parrots, such as the Kakapo and the Orange-bellied Parrot, as well as some of the most abundant and difficult to manage, such as the Long-billed Corella and Galah. As most of the threatening processes within the region - habitat clearance, changes in fire regimes and loss of nesting hollows - affect at least one species of parrot, BAPA will promote discussion and an exchange of ideas that should benefit many other bird species as well.

Publication

BAPA published a newsletter, Eclectus, and plans expeditions and projects, as well as preparing policies on parrot-related matters.
