Brisbane City Council Conservation Partnerships |
This survey project is a joint 10 year agreement between Brisbane City Council (BCC), Birds Australia Southern Queensland (BASQ) and Birds Queensland (BQ). Members of BASQ and BQ access properties of selected members of Council’s Conservation Partnerships program, for the purposes of recording and monitoring the bird species present on the sites.
The objectives of the Project
- Obtain accurate records of birds present on privately owned remnant bushland patches in Brisbane
- Increase the property owner’s knowledge and awareness species present
- Encourage property owners to take an interest in fauna species present
- Establish long term (10 year) monitoring sites on two (2) Voluntary Conservation Agreement properties
- Survey two (2) different Land for Wildlife properties each year
- Add records to Council’s Flora and Fauna database and the Birds Australia ATLAS
- Use long-term results in local area planning.
Birds Australia Southern Queensland supplies up to 4 birdwatchers per site at any one time. Surveys are conducted on each property per year at dawn - surveyed once in summer, autumn, winter and spring each year. The first of these surveys occurred on 28th and 29th October 2006. Ten participants helped to survey, over two days, two properties in Moggill and two properties in Brookfield. Properties ranged in size from 26ha to as small as 4ha. For each property a 2ha 20min search was conducted recording the species and numbers of each species seen. A habitat form was also completed to identify the properties characteristics. A larger area search of the property was then conducted for one to two hours, recording down all species sighted. The area search in these instances involved all of the property as the property sizes are significantly less than within 500m of a central point.
Some properties are surveyed every year, and others for one year only.

Voluntary Conservation Agreement.
Private property owners can join the VCA program. The program provides Council assistance to help property owners conserve native bushland on their property.
Land for Wildlife
This is a voluntary program that encourages and helps landowners provide habitats for wildlife on their property. They must be committed to managing part of their property in a way that maintains and enhances native habitat, and integrating nature conservation with other land management objectives.
